PrEP Program

What is a PrEP program?

The PrEP program at The R.O.C. Center is an HIV prevention program that’s affirming, easily accessible, and built around your lifestyle. The program consists of a daily pill or bi-monthly long-acting injectables based on your unique needs without judgment; just compassionate care and support.

PrEP works to reduce your risk of contracting HIV by stopping the HIV virus from infecting you and spreading throughout your body after exposure.

PrEP is FDA-approved, safe, and covered by many insurance plans. It may reduce the risk of contracting HIV by up to 99% when used exactly as directed.

Am I a candidate for the PrEP program?

If you’re at risk of developing HIV, you’re likely a candidate for the PrEP program at The R.O.C. Center. You may be at risk because of having unprotected sex, having a partner with HIV, being diagnosed with an STD within the last six months, or injecting drugs and sharing needles. You must first undergo HIV testing and test negative before using PrEP.

What can I expect from a PrEP program?

The two forms of PrEP include pills and injections. If you choose the pill form, you must take the pills exactly as instructed once daily. This option is convenient, but you must remember to take the medication every day to maximize its effectiveness. See The R.O.C Center specialists about every three months for HIV testing, follow-up visits, and prescription refills.

If you’re a candidate for PrEP injections, The R.O.C Center specialists administer a shot every two months. This option is ideal if you prefer not to take a pill daily.

PrEP is safe and FDA-approved. No significant health effects occurred in individuals who used PrEP for up to five years. If you develop side effects like diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, stomach pain, or headaches, they aren't usually serious and typically resolve over time.

Keep in mind that while PrEP helps protect you against HIV, it’s not designed to prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
