HIV & STI Testing Q&A

What is HIV and STI testing?

HIV and STI testing at The R.O.C. Center involves tests that screen for STIs, including:

  • Gonorrhea (results in 30 minutes)
  • Chlamydia (results in 30 minutes)
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Herpes
  • Hepatitis B and C
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Syphilis (rapid and confirmatory)
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)

These infections spread from person to person through unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex with an infected partner. Testing determines if you need treatment to cure a disease or minimize symptoms and the risk of transmission.

The R.O.C. Center offers HIV specialty care in a compassionate, nonjudgemental environment. The specialists meet you where you are, whether you’re navigating long-term treatment, re-entering care, or are newly diagnosed. We proudly serve the LGBTQIA+ community, including transgender and nonbinary individuals.

What are the symptoms of STIs?

If you have an STI, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Genital, oral, or rectal bumps or sores
  • Pain during sex
  • Swollen or sore lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Unusual or smelly vaginal or penis discharge
  • Burning or painful urination
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Rash on your feet, hands, or trunk
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding in women

However, not everyone with HIV or other STIs has noticeable symptoms, at least not initially. That’s why HIV and STI testing are critical if you’re at risk of contracting these diseases.

Are HIV and STI testing right for me?

You may be at risk of contracting HIV or other STIs if you have unprotected sexual intercourse, have multiple sexual partners, or share needles. You may also be a candidate for testing if you're undergoing a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) program for HIV prevention.
