Hepatitis C & Mpox Test Q&A

What are hepatitis C and monkeypox testing?

Hepatitis C and monkeypox testing are lab tests that diagnose an infection with hepatitis C or monkeypox. These tests are simple and painless. You might be a candidate for hepatitis C or monkeypox testing if you’ve been exposed to someone with these viruses, engage in risky behaviors (such as needle sharing or unprotected sex), or develop symptoms.

What are the symptoms of hepatitis C and monkeypox?

The symptoms you develop depend on which virus you’ve contracted. You may experience fatigue, jaundice, fever, muscle aches, nausea, easy bruising and bleeding, reduced appetite, dark-colored urine, leg swelling, weight loss, spider-like blood vessels, or itchy skin due to hepatitis C. Acute phases of hepatitis C don’t always become chronic.

Monkeypox can cause flu-like symptoms (fatigue, fever, muscle aches, chills, headaches, etc.) and a rash, ulcers, or blisters on your skin.

Who is a candidate for hepatitis C and monkeypox testing?

Anyone at risk of contracting hepatitis C or monkeypox, individuals experiencing symptoms, and those with HIV are candidates for sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. Risky behaviors include needle sharing, having unprotected sexual intercourse, and being in close contact with individuals with hepatitis C or monkeypox.

People with a monkeypox rash can be tested for monkeypox.

What should I expect during hepatitis C and monkeypox testing?

The type of test you undergo depends on which virus you’re being tested for. Your specialist may swab monkeypox rash sores and send them to a lab for analysis. You might also need a blood test. The results are typically available within several days. Hepatitis C testing also consists of blood tests.

You can complete hepatitis C or monkeypox testing at The R.O.C. Center office or from the comfort of your home via at-home test kits available at the practice.

Monkeypox usually resolves within 2-4 weeks, and you can take medications to treat hepatitis C. Vaccinations are available for monkeypox, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B.
